James E. Harris, Sr, 85, of Defiance, passed away on Saturday, January 20, 2018 at Twin Rivers Care and Rehabilitation Center in Defiance.
He was born on August 26, 1932 to the late Ernest and Zella (Corwin) Harris in Defiance. On June 4, 1954 he married Joann (Ripke) Harris, who preceded him in death in 2013.
At the age of 17, Jim enlisted in the Army during the Korean War to serve his country. While in the service, he received a Purple Heart, as well as a Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service, Medal and 3 Bronze Service Stars, indicating 3 major battle campaigns, a United Nations Service Medal, and a Combat Infantryman's Badge. When returning home after the war, he drove semi trucks his entire life to provide for his wife and family.
James will be greatly missed by his sons, Terry (Denise) Harris of Perrysburg, James (Cathy) Harris, Jr. of Defiance, Richard "Rick" (Chris) Harris of Defiance, and Corey (Nicole) Harris of Paulding. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren, 2 great-great-grandchildren, and sister, Irene Boetz of Bryan.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, a daughter Michele "Mick" Curtis, son-in-law Tom Curtis, and a great-grandson Anakin Curtis.
A Memorial Service with Military Honors will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, January 30, 2018 at Schaffer Funeral Home, with Pastor David Brobston officiating. Visitation will be held from 10-11 am on Tuesday, one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Defiance VFW post 3360 will accord military honors. Burial will be held at a later date in the Veterans Section at Riverside Cemetery.
