Edna Louise Hammersmith, age 90 of Defiance, passed into Eternity on October 19, 2017 at Glenn Park in Defiance where she resided since 2016.

She was born on August 27, 1927 in Pleasant Bend, Ohio, the daughter of Forrest G. and Edna (Smith) Carlson.  She graduated from Highland-South Richland High School on May 17, 1945 and the Flower Hospital School of Nursing on August 12, 1948. Later that year, on November 20th, she married Ralph H. Hammersmith Jr. in Defiance, and enjoyed serving her community as a nurse in hospitals in both the Toledo and Defiance area.  As their family grew, she then focused on raising their children and assisting her husband as co-owner of Defiance Truck Sales and Service until his retirement in 1992.

She will be missed by her four surviving sons - Craig (Chris), Dennis (Laura) and Edward (Linda) of Defiance and Jeffrey of Douglas, Mich.; a daughter, Kathy (Matt) Brunner of Waterville, along with eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.  She is preceded in death by her husband, their three sons, Ronald, Tom and Phillip; her parents, a sister - Mrs. John (Mary) Dellinger, and brothers, Wayne and Earl Carlson.

Throughout her life, she attended both St. John's Catholic Church and St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Defiance.  She graciously acknowledged God as her Provider and her love of giving not only touched those close to her but also spilled over to others in the community.  She enjoyed traveling with her husband and family members, taking her chances in casinos and drives in the country.  She lived a full life with an upbeat spirit - whether surrounded by family, friends or flowers - and was often heard to say, 'Every day I'm living is a good day'. Her 'good day' is forever now in Eternity.

Respecting her wishes, there will be no visitation or services.  Memorials are suggested to Sarah's House in Defiance or a charity of your choice.  The family would like to thank Louise's care givers and friends at Glenn Park.  Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance has handled the arrangements and condolences may be made online at www.Schafferfh.com.
