Doris Anita Shawley, 97, of Defiance, peacefully passed away on Thursday, October 5, 2017 at The Laurels of Defiance.   
  
She was born on February 16, 1920 in Defiance, the daughter of Forrest and Mildred (Moran) Shawley. She attended the eighth grade at St. Mary Catholic School. She graduated from Defiance High School in 1938, graduated from Defiance College in 1942 with a BA Degree in Education, and again in 1946 with a BS Degree. She attended Bowling Green State University, Indiana University, and the University of Colorado.

Doris taught school for 42 1/2 years, the last 32 years as head of the Mathematics Department in Ottoville. While at Ottoville she taught home economics and mathematics, and she served as junior class and prom advisor for many years. It must be noted that 37 of her math students ranked on the state level in the Ohio Tests of Scholastic Achievement. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Defiance, and was an active member of the Altar Rosary Society. She was a life member of the Ohio Retired Teachers Association, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and the Ohio Council of Teachers of Mathematics. She was a member of the Paulding, Putnam, and Defiance County Chapter of Ohio Retired Teachers Association, and a member of the NRTA Division of AARP.
  
Preceding her in death were her parents, brothers James, Roger, and Kenneth, a sister Marjorie, and several nieces and nephews.
 
Visitation will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Schaffer Funeral Home in Defiance. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Monday, October 9, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church, with Fr. John Stites officiating. Burial will follow the service at Riverside Cemetery.
