David Michael Welty, 70, of Defiance, passed away peacefully on March 19, 2017 at  CHP Defiance Area Inpatient Hospice Center.  
  
He was born on June 30, 1946 to  Kenneth and Verda Mae (Jones) Welty in Lima, Ohio. He married Barbara (Bunten) Welty on December 28, 1974.

He graduated from Columbus Grove High School in 1964, attained his Eagle Scout Rank, graduated from Defiance College in 1969, and received his Masters in Education from St. Francis College. He began his teaching career at Ottoville High School and continued at Ayersville High School, retiring in 2004 after 35 years of service. He fulfilled his love of sports by coaching football, basketball, and track at Ayersville High School and Defiance College. He completed 25 years as OHSAA and USTAF track official at the high school and college levels. 

David was a long time member of  St. Paul's United Methodist Church and volunteered at the church food pantry. He also volunteered at Defiance Regional Medical Center, and Good Samaritan School, and was a member of Hamler Historical Society. He was an avid supporter of the Ayersville Pilots, and will be missed by many. 

David is survived by his loving wife, Barbara, his three daughters, Tara (Kyle) Slagley of Shanghai, China, Erin Herbert of Reese, MI, and Jill Welty of Tiffin, OH, his grandchildren, Braden, Brody, and Nolan Herbert, sister Jane (Leroy) Wigfall of Ft. Worth, TX, and a brother John (Florianne) Welty of Laveen, Arizona. Also surviving are one niece and two nephews.

A Celebration of Life Service will be at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 25, 2017 at 11:00 am, with visitation one hour prior to the service, with Pastor Joe Payne officiating.  Burial will follow at Hill Cemetery in Ayersville, Ohio.
