I married my highschool sweetheart Holly (Bowman) Evinger in 1994 and we have two daughters: Alaina and Lydia. My community involvements include: St. Paul United Methodist Church, Masonic Lodge, Maumee Valley Sportsmen's Club where I am active in Trap & Skeet leagues, Northwest Ohio Harley Owners Group, National Funeral Directors Assoc., and Ohio Funeral Directors Assoc.. Having worked for a corporation owned funeral home and family owned funeral home, I have found it better for the families I serve to know that the staff is local and the business is managed locally, and where the families best interest will always come first.

Sara L. G. Barnes

Sara L. G. Barnes
Licensed Funeral Director & Embalmer

Hello Defiance!
My name is Sara (Underhill) Barnes & am a first generation funeral director/embalmer at the Schaffer Funeral Home. I was born and raised in Cincinnati, where I graduated from Anderson High School (2000), University of Cincinnati (2006), and Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science (spring 2011). I spent 8 months of my apprenticeship in Sylvania (Toledo), Ohio at Reeb Funeral Home.
I relocated to Defiance in 2011, where I found my other half; Michael Barnes. He relocated from Texas, we met at Kissner's, and we were  married in May of 2014. We are also expecting our first child in March 2015.
I realize no one wants to use the services of a Funeral Professional but until we figure out how to live forever, I will be available to guide you through the difficult process of planning a funeral. Hopefully, that isn’t the only way you will get to know me!
I attend St. John Catholic Church, am a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, the Ohio Embalmers Association, and I am working towards obtaining my CFSP from the Academy of Professional Funeral Service Practitioners. I am also currently serving as Secretary/Treasurer for District One of the Ohio Funeral Directors Association.
I enjoy listening to all kinds of music (especially live music). I spend the winter hibernating, reading books (mostly science fact), & hanging out with our cats, Pen, & Paper, and Sloan. My summers are usually spent gardening, hiking, & camping.

Jeffery R. Strayer

Jeffery R. Strayer
Funeral Director & Embalmer

I am a native of Henry County, OH, raised in the small town of Liberty Center, in a blue collar home, the oldest of three children.  I graduated from Liberty Center High School in 1980.  After attending Holy Cross Junior College and Indiana Wesleyan University, I graduated from the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science with a Bachelor of Mortuary Science Degree in 1998.  After working with a few other funeral homes I found my niche at Schaffer Funeral Home, where I am happy to be living and working in Defiance.

My church home is at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Maumee OH, where I serve as a Chalice Bearer, serve on the Christian Education Committee, and also participate in our bi-annual rummage sale.  In my spare time I enjoy working on my house, gardening, geneology, photography, and painting.

My professional memberships include National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA), Ohio Funeral Directors Association (OFDA), and Ohio Embalmers Association (OEA).  I also hold an Ohio Limited Insurance License, and am willing to assist anyone interested in pre-arranging funeral services.
